The United Steelworkers of America (USWA) and the Paper, Allied Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union (PACE) will merge, the two organizations announced Jan. 11. The international executive boards of the two unions voted unanimously for the merger, which will be voted on by PACE and USWA members at concurrent conventions slated for April. The merger will create a union with more than 850,000 active members in over 8,000 bargaining units in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean, PACE said in a news release. The new union will be called the United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied-Industrial and Service Workers International Union.
