Boeing and Honeywell Help Airlines Reduce Inventories

The Integrated Materials Management system project helps cut costs.

A pair of aerospace giants -- Boeing and Honeywell Aerospace -- are teaming up on a supply chain project aimed at significantly reducing airlines' maintenance costs by providing expendable parts.

As part of Boeing's Integrated Materials Management (IMM) initiative, Boeing and suppliers like Honeywell maintain an airline's inventory of spare parts, providing items as needed. The airlines benefit by carrying less inventory themselves, thus reducing their costs of doing business. Major airlines already participating in the IMM project include AirTran, All Nippon, Delta Air Lines, Japan Airlines, KLM and Singapore Airlines.

Honeywell provides 725,000 parts from 150 global manufacturers and 2,600 suppliers. Other supplier partners in the IMM include Hamilton Sundstrand, Satair, UFC Aerospace, WS Wilson and the Boeing subsidiary, Aviall.
