Food Safety Concerns: By the Numbers

Consumers think food manufacturers should be held more accountable for their product quality.

Food products manufacturers have lost some credibility with consumers in recent years in light of product recalls and foodborne illness reports. A survey by the American Society for Quality shows consumers think food manufacturers should be held more accountable for their product quality.

According to the survey:

93 percent of adults say food manufacturers, growers or suppliers should be held legally responsible when individuals are fatally sickened by tainted food

61 percent of U.S. adults regard the U.S. food recall process as fair or poor

73 percent of adults say they are as equally concerned about food safety as the war on terror

82 percent of adults believe the food industry should be required to follow international standards on food safety
