Swiss Chemicals Group Clariant to Cut 800 More Jobs

Oct. 12, 2009
Company posted Q2 loss of $56 million

Clariant said on Oct. 12 it will cut 800 more jobs, after having already announced 1,900 job losses this year.

The fresh cuts by the end of 2009 and next year will include 450 posts in Europe, 40 in Switzerland and 180 in Germany, a spokesman said.

Clariant announced 1,350 job cuts in February and 500 more in June, most of which have "been realized," the spokesman said, adding that the group is suffering from a "difficult economic situation."

Clariant posted a second-quarter loss of 61 million Swiss francs (US$ 56.5 million) in July.

It warned then that measures were needed in 2009 and 2010 "in line with the companys goal to close the performance gap to its peers and to adjust the companys structure to the global recession."
