India Phases Out CFCs in Manufacturing Aerosol Products

Asks other countries to follow suit

At the 19th meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol, held in Montreal on Sept. 18, Shri Namo Narayan Meena, India's Minister of State for Environment and Forests, said that India has phased out the use of chloroflurocarbons (CFCs) in manufacturing aerosol products excluding metered dose inhaler, foam and all types of refrigeration equipments

The Montreal Protocol, signed in 1987, put in place a long-term goal to reduce ozone-depleting emissions. So far, 95% of gases that deplete the ozone layer have been eliminated by the 191 countries that signed on to the Montreal Protocol, according to the Montreal Gazette.

Meena urged other countries to follow phasing out process at the earliest as it would check trade in equipment containing ODSs specifically CFCs and Halons. The Minister said technical assistance need to be provided for destruction of ODSs to prevent emissions in the atmosphere.

He also appealed that adequate funding availability of environmentally safe substitutes and expeditious transfer of related technologies under fair and favorable conditions need to be ensured. This will assist developing countries in preparing strategies for taking action to meet the first target for HCFCs control measures under this Protocol.
