Bosch to Build Pilot Plant for New Lithium-ion Batteries

Aug. 23, 2011
Company will work with BASF and Thyssenkrupp

Industrial group Bosch said on August 23 that it will build a plant to make next-generation lithium-ion batteries for use other than in automobiles.

Bosch did not provide financial details of its plan, which is to include BASF on the materials side and Thyssenkrupp on construction.

Bosch hopes to produce more than 200,000 lithium-ion cells per year by 2015, at which point it plans to expand the activity to include batteries for marine use.

The group already has an interest in SB LiMotive, a joint venture with the Korean group Samsung SDI that produces batteries for electric vehicles.
