A new study by the Brookings Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Program, studied 50 high-technology innovation industries considered crucial to future prosperity in the United States.

The report “America’s Advanced Industries: What They Are, Where They Are, and Why They Matter,” points out that these industries directly employ 12.2 million Americans and, factoring in both direct and indirect employment, supports over one-quarter of all U.S. jobs.

At the metropolitan level, San Jose, Calif.; Seattle, Wash. and Wichita, Kan. hold the top three spots in total share of employment in advanced industries.
