Audi Sales Boosted by U.S., China

June 7, 2010
U.S. sales increased 22.7% while China sales were up 39.9%

A booming Chinese market and a strong recovery in the United States boosted German luxury car maker Audi in May, leading to a 14.6% rise in unit sales, the Volkswagen unit said on June 8.

Audi delivered 94,900 vehicles last month, with unit sales in China up 39.9% to 17,396 vehicles.

Western European deliveries increased by 5% to 55,250 cars, and U.S. unit sales were 22.7% stronger at 9,205 vehicles.

Audi's domestic market Germany was weaker however, posting a drop of 4.6% to 19,759 units.

Sales director Peter Schwarzenbauer was quoted as saying that "for the overall year of 2010, I expect a significantly double-digit growth rate" in unit sales.

Luxury car makers including BMW and Mercedes-Benz did not benefit much from car scrapping schemes last year, but have seen sales rebound strongly since then.
