In its eighth consecutive month of annual gains, GM said on June 2 that its U.S. sales rose 16.6% in May from a year earlier.

GM said 223,822 of its cars and trucks were sold in May, outpacing April sales of 183,091 vehicles that had marked a 20% increase year-over-year.

The carmaker, which was rescued from bankruptcy by the federal government last year, said that the four brands it retained following restructuring -- Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac -- notched up combined sales 31% higher than in May 2009.
