The leading economic index for Germany, as compiled by the New York-based Conference Board, rose a tenth of a percentage point in January, the latest month for which data are available. The index now stands at 103.4 (1990=100).

No longer Europe's "locomotive," Germany's economy is expected to resume growing only "at a sluggish rate" during the next few months, says the business research group.
