General Motors is looking at the possibility of siting a car plant in Central Europe, Zoltan Kaszas the GM public relations manager for its Central European headquarters said on July 12. He confirmed industry reports that seven countries are being looked at as possible sites: Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.
"We want to go where people are buying cars, there is a good and qualified workforce there and we could have a network of suppliers," GM regional manager, Chris Lacey, said.
Many multinationals have already launched car plants in Eastern Europe in recent years, South Korea's Hyundai is currently building a plant in the east of the Czech Republic. Across the border in Slovakia, sister company Kia, has recently launched production. Central Europe's biggest car producer is Czech-based Skoda Auto, part of the Volkswagen Group.
