Reversing four months of gains, both personal income in the U.S. and consumer spending decreased in August, the most recent month for which data are available. Personal income fell $5.3 billion or one-tenth of a percentage point in August; personal consumption expenditures fell $47.2 billion or half a percent, the U.S. Commerce Department reported on September 30.
