Survey Says: Manufacturing IT Called "Insecure"

Dec. 6, 2007
IM and Web mail often used to send sensitive, proprietary data despite management concerns.

A recent study by KRC Research found that 85% of technology decision-makers (such as IT managers) 78% of business decision-makers (such as directors of supply chain) at high-tech companies use at least one form of non-secure public communication tool (such as IM or web email).

According to the survey results, manufacturing companies routinely send product plans, technical data and other proprietary information over insecure forms of communication. Despite their wide use, only 27% of business decision-makers and 37% of technology decision-makers consider them to be "definitely" secure.
