Unlike some news sites that had problems with hateful or mean-spirited commentary in our user-engagement areas, the reasons for getting rid of comments last year were completely technical and related to agreements with partner companies. Traditionally, IW commentors have been respectful, engaged and insightful in responding to our articles, videos and slideshows.
When we stopped accepting new comments, we archived existing reader notes on stories, and we've restored those messages on older articles.
Rules and terms for comments can be found by following this link, but they can really be summed up as, "Don't be a jerk." Foul language and personal attacks will likely be taken down, but strong opinions are fine and encouraged.
