Suzuki, Nissan Plan Indian Plant

Japanese vehicle manufacturer Suzuki said Sept. 7 it was negotiating with Nissan Motor Co. to build a factory in India that would export 400,000 vehicles annually. Plant location and investment were not disclosed. Suzuki already has a plant in Gurgaon, a satellite of New Delhi that rolls out 600,000 units a year, mainly for the local market, Press Trust of India said.

Also on Sept. 7, Honda Motors said it was looking at entering India's small car market. Honda India chief executive officer Masahiro Takedagawa said Honda planned to set up a second plant that would involve an investment of $200 million over five years.

Car sales in India reached 1.1 million last year and estimates suggest the market will nearly double to two million by 2010.
