Toyota Union Cancels Annual Wage Rally Amid Recall

Toyota Motor Workers' Union, with a membership of 63,000 workers, is cancelling its annual call for pay increases.

Toyota's leading labor union said March 3 that it would cancel an annual spring rally for higher wages out of consideration for the automaker's massive recall crisis.

"We are part of Toyota, which has caused such troubles for our customers and dealers," said Nobuyuki Nakamaru, spokesman of the Toyota Motor Workers' Union. "Under these circumstances, we don't want people around the world to see footage of a rally demanding a pay raise," he said.

Toyota Motor Workers' Union, with a membership of 63,000 workers, is one of the main labor unions of the company.

Around 3,000 members usually participate in the union's annual rally in spring, when most Japanese companies hold labor negotiations, Nakamaru said. The rally had been planned for next March 9.
