Sometimes a great idea just doesn't work out. After six years, Chicago-based Boeing Co. is pulling the plug on its Connexion service, which provides high-speed broadband communications connections for airline passengers.

"Regrettably, the market for this service has not materialized as had been expected," said W. James McNerney, Boeing's chairman and CEO, when the company announced its decision on August 17. Breaking the connection, estimates Boeing, could result in a pre-tax charge of up to $320 million against second-half 2006 earnings.
