Drug Maker Abbott to Acquire Advanced Medical Optics

Deal valued at $2.8 billion

U.S. pharmaceutical firm Abbott is to acquire local eye care products' manufacturer Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) in a $2.8 billion deal, the companies announced on Jan. 12.

"With AMO, Abbott is enhancing and strengthening its diverse mix of medical device businesses and gaining a leadership position in another large and growing segment," Abbott chief executive Miles White said.

AMO is a top maker of laser and cataract surgical devices and contact lens care products.
