Engineering group ABB said on March 23 that it had won a $900 million contract to supply a 1,728-1,074-mile long ultra high voltage power line in India.

The company said that it would carry out the project with Indian state-owned power company Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).

"ABB... has been selected by Power Grid Corp. of India Ltd to deliver an ultra high voltage transmission system, worth about $900 million," it added.

The link will carry hydro-electric power from northeastern India to the city of Agra.

It will be capable of supplying enough electricity to serve up to 90 million people based on India's average national consumption, according to the engineering giant.
