A quick glance at the map below says a lot about manufacturing in the United States.
Plotting out where the IW U.S. 500 companies call home shows heavy concentration in California (56 companies call the Golden State home) and Texas (52 manufacturers have headquarters in the Lone Star State) -- both hot spots of manufacturing.
Once again, petroleum & coal products is the highest revenue generating industry on the IW 500 list with $1.2 trillion. Computers & other electronic products is the second-highest revenue generating industry with $544 billion.

The Rust Belt also houses many manufacturers. Illinois has 41 companies -- including
Boeing Co. (No. 13) and
Caterpillar Inc. (No. 22) -- represented on the
IW 500 list, Ohio contributes 32 companies with
Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. (No. 50) and
AK Steel Holding Corp. (No. 155), Pennsylvania has 28 companies including
United States Steel Corp. (No. 66) and Michigan represents 27 of the 500 companies, and is home to
General Motors Corp. (No. 2) and
Ford Motor Co. (No. 6).
