Steeling the South: Inside an ArcelorMittal Steel Processing Plant [SLIDESHOW]

Sept. 17, 2014
The joint venture announced on Sept. 16 a $40 million slab yard expansion project and a $6.7 million investment in the No.4 continuous coating line.

The AM/NS Calvert plant, like the steel it processes, has forged a name for itself as a premier finishing facility, despite the elemental transformation it has weathered.

The plant, a $4.6 billion project announced in 2007 and opened in 2010, was sold by ThyssenKrupp (IW 1000/82) in February 2014 before it ever reached full capacity.

Now, a joint venture between ArcelorMittal (IW 1000/49) and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corp. (IW 1000/84), the 1,550 employee plant is operating at about 80% of its total annual capacity of 5.3 million metric tons.

And the plant is about to undergo even more changes, as the joint venture announced on Sept. 16 a $40 million slab yard expansion project and a $6.7 million investment in the No.4 continuous coating line.
