Three North American Stellantis plants will soon get a combined $99 million upgrade in order to produce a new engine, the company announced August 1.
Dundee Engine Complex in Michigan, Kokomo Casting Plant in Indiana, and the Etobicoke Casting Plant will each contribute production to build a new 1.6-liter, I-4 turbocharged engine Stellantis says it plans to use in two North American hybrid electric vehicles. The plans for the engine are based off a current Stellantis production engine in Europe.
Dundee Engine will receive the lion’s share of the money. The parent company of Jeep, Chrysler, and other vehicle brands announced it would spend about $83 million turning the Michigan plant into the final assembly location for the new engine. It will continue to produce engines for two Jeep Grand Cherokee models.
Meanwhile, Stellantis will spend $14 million to set up engine block casting operations at Kokomo Casting Plant. The remaining $2 million will be spent on new tooling and equipment upgrades at Etobicoke Casting, which will make the new engine’s oil pan.
