China's product safety watchdog on Feb. 26 warned drivers of imported Toyotas to have their cars checked for possible defects, after the recall of millions of vehicles made by the Japanese auto giant.
More than 75,000 Toyota RAV4 sport utility vehicles made in China have already been recalled over faulty accelerator pedals, among a total of about eight million worldwide, but the new move affects models likely bought abroad.
"More cars with the flaws may be still in use in China," the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said.
Consumers who drive certain models including the Tundra, Camry or Corolla built in the United States or Japan should immediately check with Toyota service centers to see whether their cars are affected by the recall, it said. Owners of those models are urged to report to authorities any flaws with the accelerator pedal and brake system and injuries incurred, it said.
The Chinese watchdog body did not say how many cars were possibly affected. It added it would decide whether to "take further measures" based on information collected.
Toyota president Akio Toyoda has pledged to restore consumers' shattered faith in the brand and take safety "to the next level" during a visit to Washington this week.
