Most of the business cases being argued before the U.S. Supreme Court during the term that began Oct. 2 won't affect manufacturers at the plant level. But three could. Environmental Defense v. Duke Energy Corp. (05-848) involves challenges to regulations issued under the Clean Air Act and the effect of process and equipment modifications.
Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. (05-1074) involves the statute of limitations for settlement of a pay dispute under terms of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
And a consolidated case, Davenport v. Washington Education Association (05-1589) and Washington v. Washington Education Association (05-1657), deals with the use of union dues for political purposes. Decisions are expected by the end of June 2007.
