GM Announces Awards for Top 2020 Suppliers

General Motors announced June 22 it had awarded 177 of its suppliers for their 2020 performance. Twenty-six companies received GM’s Overdrive Award, and 122 companies received Supplier of the Year awards. GM has been awarding Supplier of the Year awards for 29 years now and Overdrive Awards for about ten.

According to GM, the prizes are meant to recognize suppliers for exceeding the company’s supplier requirements. The Overdrive awards, meanwhile, are specifically for suppliers that align with more specific priorities like sustainable value streams, total enterprise profitability, and safety.

Silpan Amin, in a statement, commended the suppliers for performing well during a uniquely challenging year that saw General Motors shut down U.S. production for about two months between March 18 and May 18, 2020.

“Through a challenging year, our suppliers have showed resilience and dedication in working toward our shared goal,” said Silpan Amin, GM’s VP of global purchasing and supply chain. “We are pleased with what we’ve accomplished together in the past year and we are excited by the opportunity that lies ahead,” she said.

The 26 Overdrive winners represent eight different countries, while Supplier of the Year winners represent 16. GM also said six of the 122 Supplier of the Year winners and four of the 26 Overdrive winners are minority-owned companies.

Among the winners of GM’s more distinguished prize are DuPont Mobility & Materials, Valeo, Cooper Standard, and LG Energy Solution. LG Energy Solution is notable for its part in Ultium LLC, a joint venture owned by it and GM that researches and produces lithium-ion batteries for GM’s electric vehicles.
