Rolls-Royce Lands a $1.1 Billion Order from Air Lease Corp.

Feb. 4, 2013
“We look forward to receiving these engines, which are demonstrating excellent operational performance and environmental efficiency and will help deliver real advantages to our customers,” said Steven Udvar-Hazy, CEO of Air Lease.

Rolls-Royce nabbed a $1.1 billion order from Air Lease Corp. for Trent XWB engines for its 25 Airbus A350XWB aircraft.

Twenty of the engines will support A350-900 aircraft and five will power A350-1000 aircraft, which use a higher-thrust version of the Trent XWB engine, a news release from Rolls-Royce said. Air Lease also has options for another five A350-1000 aircraft.

The deal marks Los Angeles-based Air Lease’s first time using the Trent XWB engines, said Steven Udvar-Hazy, CEO of Air Lease.

TheTrent XWB engines were developed for the A350 and in 2014 will power the first A350 into service, Rolls-Royce said. The A350 XWB is Airbus’s new wide-body aircraft set to compete with Boeing’s grounded 787 Dreamliner fleet.

“We look forward to receiving these engines, which are demonstrating excellent operational performance and environmental efficiency and will help deliver real advantages to our customers,” Udvar-Hazy said.

Rolls-Royce already has sold more than 1,200 of its Trent XWB engines – its fastest selling Trent engine to date. The engine’s first debut was in February 2012, when the engine was used on an Airbus 380 flying test bed.
