Workers at the Anchieta plant of the local affiliate of Germany's Volkswagen walked out on strike Aug. 30 after the company said it would be cutting 1,800 jobs, a union source said.
The plant in Sao Bernardo do Campo on the outskirts of Sao Paulo is the biggest of four VW has in Brazil, with 12,000 workers. Eight thousand are factory workers and the rest administrative.
Late Aug. 29 workers began an on-site work freeze to protest the job cuts which take effect November 21.
