Despite additional manufacturing layoffs in North Carolina and Kentucky, initial claims for unemployment insurance fell to 310,000 last week, the U.S. Labor Department reported on September 7.That figure was 9,000 fewer than the previous week's revised number of 319,000.

The department's four-week moving average also declined for the week ending September 2, falling to 315,250, a decrease of 3,000 claims from the previous week's revised average of 318,250.
