Ford, Stellantis, General Motors Plant Investments Promised to Win UAW Contracts

Nov. 7, 2023
In addition to wage increases, a faster track to top wages for newer workers and retiree benefits, the UAW won investment guarantees from Detroit's automakers in recent contract talks.

Workers at Ford, Stellantis and General Motors plants are voting on the United Auto Workers new tentative deals with the automakers, lucrative contracts that call for 27% wage increases and significant improvements in retiree benefits and wage progression for younger workers. In contract summaries sent out to workers, the UAW also spells out how much and where it will invest in its plants, offering job commitments to employees. The following tables come from those UAW contract summaries, in order of when the companies reached a tentative deal with the UAW.

Ford Investments

As with GM and Stellantis, lower down in this story, some of the Ford investments mentioned in the UAW deal aren't exactly new. In 2022, Ford announced a $1.5 billion EV truck investment for its Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon Lake, Ohio, so the new $2.1 billion figure includes that investment plus other upgrades to the plant. Still, the company plans more than $8.1 billion in plant spending throughout the life of the contract, offering job security to workers at several plants.
