British Car Output Rises 5.8% in 2011

Engine production grew 4.9%

Reaching 1.34 million in 2011, compared to 2010, the number of cars built in British factories rose 5.8%, official figures showed on Han. 19.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) added that engine production grew 4.9% to 2.5 million units.

"UK vehicle and engine production continues to lead the manufacturing recovery, with increased output and exports taking a record-breaking share," SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said.

"In 2011, vehicle manufacturers renewed their commitment to the UK, securing new model programs, facilities and jobs for the long term."

Earlier this month, Nissan said its factory in Sunderland, northeast England, produced more than 480,000 cars last year, a record high for a British plant.
