Toyota's U.S. Sales Down 9.2% in March

However, the automaker's first-quarter U.S. sales increased 11%.

Toyota said its U.S. sales in March dropped 9.2% compared with March 2010, on a daily selling-rate basis.

The automaker reported March U.S. sales of 176,222 units.

On a raw-volume basis, unadjusted for 27 selling days in March 2011 compared with 26 selling days in March 2010, Toyota's U.S. sales were down 5.7% from the year-ago month, according to Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc.

Sales for the Toyota division dropped 10.1% on a daily selling-rate basis from March 2010, while sales for the Lexus division dipped 1.5% by the same measure.

For the first quarter, Toyota Motor Sales USA reported sales of 433,924 vehicles, an increase of 11% percent over the same period in 2010, on a daily selling-rate basis.

With 75 selling days in first-quarter 2011, compared with 74 selling day in first-quarter 2010, sales were up 12.5% on an unadjusted raw-volume basis.

Toyota Still Assessing Damage to Supply Base

In other Toyota news, the automaker reiterated today that it continues to assess the status of its supply base in Japan in the wake of the devastating March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

"We continue to assess our supply base in Japan following the earthquake/tsunami," the automaker said in a news release. "We have communicated to team members, associates and dealers here that some production interruptions in North America are likely. It's too early to predict location or duration."

Toyota emphasized that it obtains the majority of parts for its North America-built vehicles from approximately 500 suppliers in North America.

"We will continue to work closely with suppliers in North America and Japan to minimize any disruptions to Toyota's overall North American operations," the automaker said.
