Following Ukraine's crackdown on the illegal manufacture of CDs and DVDs, the U.S. is reinstating benefits for the Central European nation under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), the White House office of the U.S. Trade Representative announced (USTR) on Jan. 23.

The U.S. suspended Ukraine's GSP benefits in August 2001 and in 2002 imposed 100% tariff sanctions on $75 million worth of Ukrainian exports. GSP provides for duty-free entry to the U.S. for specified products from developing economies.

Manufactured exports from Ukraine expected to benefit most from the restoration of GSP benefits included iron and steel products, electrical products and snow skis, said USTR.
