Britain's manufacturing output climbed in January from December, rising for the third month in a row, official data showed on March 9. The office for National Statistics revealed that manufacturing output, which accounts for about 17% of overall economic activity, increased by a seasonally adjusted 0.2 % in January 2006 from the previous month.

The latest rise in manufacturing output makes it three monthly increases in a row, a situation not seen since April to July 2005. However, on a year-on-year basis, output was 1.3% lower in January.

Meanwhile, industrial production, which accounts for just over 20% of gross domestic product, rose by a seasonally adjusted 0.4% in January from the previous month. On a year-on-year basis, industrial production was 1.3% lower.
