Timken Adding Capacity in India

Dec. 28, 2010
Citing a 'steep increase in demand,' Canton, Ohio-based manufacturer will invest $8 million for expansion project.

The Timken Co. said it will invest 360 million rupees (approximately $8 million) to expand its tapered roller-bearing manufacturing capacity in India.

Timken India Ltd., the company's subsidiary in India, will be installing machines for the expansion at Timken's plant in Chennai.

The company expects to begin the expansion project in second-quarter 2011 and complete the project in fourth-quarter 2011.

Timken is a Canton, Ohio-based manufacturer of engineered bearings, alloy steels and related components and assemblies.

The expansion will increase capacity for tapered roller bearings used in construction and other off-highway vehicles as well as heavy trucks and other commercial transportation systems, according to the company.

"We are witnessing a steep increase in demand for Timken tapered roller bearings in and outside India," said Ajay Das, managing director of Timken's operations in India. "A fast-growing economy, like India, warrants an even faster development of infrastructure, and our products are targeted to meet this distinct upward trend in consumption. To match up with the increasing demand, we will be continuously looking to ramp up the capacity."
