For the second consecutive year, Sweden has met targets for energy production from renewable sources, the country's energy agency said on April 13.
"Sweden fulfilled 99.9% of its quota for the April 2005 to March 2006 period", said Roger Oestberg, spokesman for the energy agency. In accordance with EU directives, the country has a target of producing one fifteenth of its electricity from renewable sources such as water, biogas, wind and solar power by 2010, Oestberg said. The target represents 10 terrawatt hours per year of Sweden's current 150 terrawatt hours, Oestberg added.
Sweden introduced legislation requiring the use of alternative energy sources in May 2003.
