Ford continues to push ahead with its environment-friendly initiatives by announcing an investment of $1.4 billion in research and development in hybrid technology through its Volvo car subsidiary.

The research would focus on developing more efficient diesel, hybrid and alternative engines, as well as lighter body frames to reduce its cars' fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, according to an AFP report.

Additionally Ford will create a development center for hybrid systems for both Volvo's vehicles and Ford's European customers. Staffed by 20 engineers the center will supervise hybrid systems into Volvo cars across the globe as well as help the parent company place hybrid systems into its own cars.

Ford said it choose Volvo as this division has experience with advanced environmental technology systems.
