ProLogis Launches Sustainable Warehouse Initiative

Feb. 10, 2008
Firm to require all new warehouses to comply with U.S. green-building standards.

ProLogis, a global developer and manager of distribution facilities, has launched a sustainability initiative requiring all of its new development in the United States to comply with environmental standards developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), a building industry nonprofit group that promotes sustainable development. Each warehouse will be registered with the USBGC to be considered for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, a national standard for environmentally responsible construction.

This initiative was precipitated by "a growing preference among customers to lease space in buildings that have been developed with environmental efficiency in mind, explains Jack Rizzo, ProLogis's managing director of global construction.

ProLogis currently is pursuing LEED certification for facilities under design or construction in the U.S. that all told encompass 3.5 million square feet. The company has already trained all of its North American project managers on sustainability and U.S. Green Building Council LEED standards.
