Lubrizol Acquires Dow Thermoplastics Unit

The Lubrizol Corp. said Jan. 5 that it has acquired The Dow Chemical Co.'s thermoplastic polyurethane business (TPU) for an undisclosed amount.

Under the agreement, which closed on Dec. 31, 2008, Lubrizol will assume approximately 40 full-time employees. All Dow TPU products will be transitioned immediately to Lubrizol, and Dow brand names will be retained and unified under the Estane Engineered Polymers business.

Dow's TPU business had 2007 revenues of approximately $85 million. The business unit is located in Located in La Porte, Texas, where the company produces its Pellethane and Isoplast brands. Dow's TPU product line spans the continuum between elastomeric and rigid TPU properties.

Pellethane consists of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers, used in a variety of high-value elastomer applications including footwear, medical tubing, automotive, film and industrial/engineering applications. Isoplast engineering thermoplastic polyurethane resins are used in a variety of niche specialty applications that require a combination of high-end engineering plastic properties that include clarity, impact strength and chemical resistance.
