Production off 30%

Vehicle production in Mexico slumped nearly 30% in 2009, amid a global crash in the industry, automakers said on Jan. 13.

The Mexican Automotive Industry Association said vehicle production dropped 28.3% in 2009 to 1.5 million units, from 2.12 million in 2008.

"The Mexican automotive industry has gone through one of its worst crises in decades," the association said.

Around 80% of Mexico-made vehicles are exported to the U.S.
