Security Flaws Found on Apple Devices

iPad, iPhone can be exploited to obtain personal data

Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad have two critical security weaknesses, warned a German government agency in an official warning announced Aug. 4.

Apples iOS operating system has two weak points for which no path exists, said Germany's Federal Office for Information Security.

Users of Apple mobile devices should only use websites that are trustworthy and avoid opening PDF files, which could allow criminals to access passwords, banking and other personal data, along with planners, photos and e-mails, the agency warned.

Apple responded by stating that it is investigating reports of vulnerabilities on the iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone.

The security flaw centers on the mobile internet browser Safari, and the way it opens PDF files in iOS software. Last weekend, U.S.-based hackers launched JailbreakMe, a browser-based service that can unlock Apple devices from restrictions imposed by the manufacturer.

The warning relates to iPhones using iOS versions 3.1.2-4.0.1., iPads using iOS 3.2-3.2.1 and iPods Touch using iOS 3.1.2.-4.0.

The agency said it was possible, but not yet clear, whether older iOS or iPhone OS versions could also be affected.
