Motorola Inc. launched an applied research laboratory in India's high-tech hub Bangalore, as part of a plan to make the growing Asian nation its center for engineering and product development. Motorola Labs India is the company's 11th worldwide and first in India, augmenting Motorola's existing Indian research and development infrastructure of more than 1,700 software engineers, the company said in a statement on April 8.
"With access to India's proven best-in-class scientific and engineering talent and the ability to collaborate with world-class universities and institutes, Motorola believes India is the ideal market for applied research and software development," said Padmasree Warrior, Motorola's executive vice president and chief technology officer.
Several multinational corporations, including Microsoft Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co., have set up dedicated research labs in India to supplement their software and product development activities in the country.
Motorola's investment in technology and R&D in India has grown this year to $85 million, up from about $50 million in 2002. It says it plans to grow this investment by 10 to 20% per year. Motorola opened its first R&D facility in India in 1991.
