With an 11th death now linked to an exploded Takata airbag in a Honda Civic, Takata Corp. is reportedly preparing to remove its CEO, Shigehisa Takada, the International Business Times reported today.
Takada is the grandson of the company’s founder.
The number of recalled cars outfitted with the defective airbag, which can explode on impact and shoot shrapnel into the car, is nearing 50 million. This week US regulators expanded the recalls to 5 million more cars.
In addition, Ford Motor Co. on Tuesday announced a recall of nearly 400,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada after a coroner determined that an air bag defect contributed to the death of a driver in a 2006 Ford Ranger.
Takata recently asked automakers for assistance in financing replacement parts for the recall cars.
