Will stop production in February at five plants

The Sony Corp. said on Dec. 26 that it will exit the rear-projection TV market as it will instead focus its resources on liquid crystal display TVs and organic light-emitting diodes.

In February it will stop production at three plants in Japan and plants in Malaysia and Mexico, according to company spokesman Shinji Obana."We have witnessed a downtrend for the rear projection television market in recent years and it doesn't seem to stop," Obana said,
as reported on AFP.

Sony sold 1.1 million rear projection televisions worldwide in the year to March 2007 but the shipments for the current business year have been cut back to 400,000 from an originally planned 700,000, he said.
