General Motors of Canada has named Stephen K. Carlisle its new president and managing director.

Carlisle succeeds Kevin W. Williams, who is retiring after heading GM Canada for the past four years. Williams will remain through the end of the year to ease the transition for Carlisle, who will assume leadership of Oshawa, Ontario-based GM Canada’s 9,000 employees.

Carlisle most recently served as vice president of global product planning and program management and previously held positions as vice president of U.S. sales operations; president and managing director of GM South East Asia Operations; and other leadership positions in Singapore and China.

He will report to Alan Batey, president of GM North America.

“Having worked intensely on GM’s world-leading new products and technology strategies, I am excited to bring my enthusiasm and product focus to Canada,” Carlisle said. “I look forward to working with our employees, dealers and other key stakeholders to continue to build an organization that puts the customer at the center of everything we do.”

Williams, who will officially retire Dec. 31, has worked for GM (IW 500/5) (GM) since 1983. Before taking the reins of GM Canada, he served as vice president and general manager of service and parts operations; president and managing director of GM de Mexico; GM North America vice president of quality and global quality process leader; and global executive director of supplier quality, development and supplier diversity.

"In his most recent assignment, Kevin helped rebuild GM Canada after one of our most challenging periods and has established a solid foundation for growth into the future,” said Mary Barra, GM CEO.
