Steel Shipments Up 3.9% in September

But number is off 27% from August 2008

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported on Nov. 18 that for the month of September 2009, U.S. steel mills shipped 5,793,000 net tons, a 3.9% increase from the 5,570,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, August 2009.

This was a 26.9% decrease from the 7,920,000 net tons shipped in September 2008.

A month-to-month comparison of shipments shows the following changes: hot dipped galvanized sheet and strip, up 24%; hot rolled sheet, up 8%; and cold rolled sheet, up 1%.

AISI is comprised of 24 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 138 associate and affiliate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry. AISI's member companies represent approximately 75% of both U.S. and North American steel capacity.
