A product in part of fewer layoffs in manufacturing, initial claims for unemployment insurance fell last week to 313,000, some 2,000 fewer than the previous week's revised figure of 315,000, the U.S. Labor Department reported on July 6.

Although the department's four-week moving average of initial claims rose by 2,500 last week to 308,500, that number is relatively low and suggests there was significant U.S. job creation in June. The Labor Department is slated to release June employment figures on Friday, July 7.
