Measuring Investment in Education

March 14, 2011
Businesses and employees should be able to get every cent of taxes they paid to support government education back when they invest in their own education.

Thanks for the interesting article in your March issue ["Fighting the War for Talent"]. While Mr. Collins is right on track in his support of apprenticeship-type programs, to say that manufacturers are underinvesting in education seems a bit far-fetched.

Every taxpayer in the United States is investing in a government-run education system whether they like it or not.

The issue isnt the level of investment. Its the ROI achieved by current management practices. Businesses and employees should be able to get every cent of taxes they paid to support government education back when they invest in their own education. Thats a first step. The ideological struggle will be in removing government administration from an industry it has proven inept at managing -- education as a whole.
