Big Blue's new RFID data management solution targets retail and pharmaceuticals.

IBM recently announced a new RFID data management middleware solution, targeted towards the retail and pharmaceutical industries, called Websphere RFID Premises Server V6.0.

This new addition to the Websphere line helps organizations gather and analyze RFID and other data, including active and passive RFID and other automatic ID technologies like bar codes, from various locations.

Many of the major RFID reader device manufacturers including Motorola, Intermec, Alien Technology, Arcom, Impinj, Reva Systems, Sirit and Tagsys have signed on to have their hardware made compatible with IBM's WebSphere Premises Server.

Key features include a service-oriented architecture that allows for integration with ERP systems, allowing key RFID data to pass beyond the supply chain and into the back office. This allows executives to integrate their RFID data into a coherent outlook on their overall business systems, RFID included.

Websphere V6.0 also offers increased RFID reader device management capabilities. It is being sold as a piece of software, as part of a vendor's solution or as a customized solution via the channel.
