Chicago's Mondelez Plant Dunks Its Last Oreo

About half the plant's 1,200 workers will be laid off as production moves to Mexico.

The last Oreo cookie made its way down the production line on Chicago’s Southwest Side on Friday, as Mondelez International shifted the work to Mexico, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Last summer, Mondelez announced that about half the 1,200 workers at the plant would be laid off, part of its strategy to move more jobs to Mexico.

Other products, including Mini Chips Ahoy cookies and BelVita biscuits, will continue to be made at the plant.

Russell Dyer, Mondelez vice president of global communications, said that the company will continue to invest in the Chicago plant and it will “play an important role in our manufacturing network.”

Oreos will continue to be made at three other U.S. plants.
