A two-week strike at a General Motors plant in Sao Jose, Brazil ended yesterday when the company agreed to put 800 job cuts on hold until next year.

According to reports by Reuters yesterday, the local metalworkers’ union and GM agreed that the workers facing termination would receive paid leave for the next five months as the assembly line idles, then receive a severance payment if their jobs are cut early next year.

GM said last month that it was not including the Sao Jose plant, opened in 1959, in $3.8 billion in new investments through 2019 because it is not cost-competitive.  The plant produces the Chevy Corsa, Meriva, Zafira, Montana, Blazer and S-10. With annual production at 167,951, it is the third-largest GM plant in Brazil.
